There are many different versions of poker, but they all use a standard pack of 52 cards. Some also add two jokers to the deck. The hand rankings are usually based on rank (high to low) and suit, but some games also include wild cards that can take any suits or ranks. Before the cards are dealt, some Poker games may require that all players put an initial contribution into the pot. This is called the ante. After the turn, the dealer places a fourth community card on the table. This is the river, and it again triggers another round of betting. A fifth and final community card is then dealt to the table, and the players can again decide how to play their hands.

As poker has become more of an international sport, there has been a growing interest in building a standard set of tournament rules that can be used worldwide. The International Poker Federation, led by Marcel Luske, has compiled a list of 81 rules that are freely downloadable from their website and can be used in tournaments around the world. These rules are designed to prevent most of the disputes that can occur between players at different venues. While they won’t solve every dispute, the 81 official poker rules can greatly reduce the number of disagreements that occur. They are recommended for adoption by any serious poker tournament organizer.
